Three x Two Garfish (Hemiramphus robustus)
Local Common Names

(Click for large pic. 19Kb)

The large Three-by-two Garfish is well-known in the Brisbane markets, where it takes the name "Three-by-Two" from its flattened sides and angular shape, strongly reminiscent of a piece of three-inch-by-two-inch timber (i.e., 75mm by 50mm).
Apart from its remarkably slab-sided appearance it is recognisable in that a prominent black spot is usually present on each side below the dorsal fin. There is a conspicuous silvery lateral band, tapering at each end, with a blue-green band bordering it above.
The upper part of the caudal fin is yellow,' with black margins-a helpful identificatory feature. The lower portion of the tail is blue.As with all Garfish, it is larger than the upper lobe.

A high-quality table-fish, it attains 400mm (16 inches) in length. The range of this species extends from our tropical north coast southwards to at least Sydney (New South Wales), and to Western Australian waters. On the Queensland tropical coast it is found in the more turbid inshore waters, and is replaced on the Great Barrier Reef by the Black-barred Garfish
