The Anchovy is a dense‑shoaling fish of our southern coastline during midwinter. The older fish return to estuaries in the summer months when they spawn; the juveniles remain there for up to three years. Although it reaches 50mm (6 inches) it is generally taken at 75mm (3 inches) or less. It is bright purplish green above and silvery below. This fish, like the southern herring is also incorrectly termed a “pilchard”.
