Barramundi (Lates calcarifer Bloch)
Local Common Names: Barramundi

(Click for large pic. 19Kb)

This great fish, the most sought after fish in Queensland, is found in the Mary River and tributaries, and the Burrum River with rare examples caught as far south as Tin Can Bay. It is also caught in Hervey Bay especially from the Urangan Pier.
Barramundi can grow to a length of 1.5 M and reach a weight of 55 Kg (120lbs). They are regarded as our number 1 food fish.
Barramundi will rise avidly to plugs and lures; they are plucky and determined fighters. To have a large specimen fly the water when hooked makes many an angling day.
