The Barred Long tom is one of the larger representatives of the group, growing to a length of 1.5 m (5 feet). The body is distinctively ribbon like, being twice as deep as it is broad.
The species ranges through northern New South Wales through Queensland coastal waters into Western Australia; young fish will enter bays and inlets, but the larger fish are more commonly seen in our northern offshore and reef waters. A green backed fish, the silvery sides bear 6 to 8 dusky cross bars towards the tail. The pectoral fin is black tipped, the greenish caudal edged above and below with dull red. It is a characteristic of the species that the inside of the mouth is bright red.
The Barred Long tom, like any of the larger Long toms. is an acceptable table fish despite their green bones.
