Black Kingfish (Rachycentron canadus Linnaeus)
Local Common Names: Cobia

The Black Kingfish are readily recognised by the alternate brownish and silvery bands running the length of the body, seen more prominently in smaller fish. These bands fade rapidly after death.

This fish is of good edible quality. It is a powerful and tenacious fighter, a popular sporting fish amongst game fishermen. Although more easily captured by trolling with lures plugs or whole fish (usually large garfish), it is occasionally hooked by bottom fishing anglers using cut baits in quest of snapper; the series of powerful and prolonged runs that result are invariably recalled with respect.
This is typically regarded as an open water fish; however, juveniles (up to 1.8 Kg in weight) will enter estuaries and rivers, to be caught by rather surprised Bream anglers.

Season: all year

Location: deep water trolling, offshore reefs, with smaller species in rivers and estuaries
