Blackfish (Girella tricuspidata Quoy & Gaimard)
Local Common Names :Black Bream or Luderick

(Click for large pic. 23Kb)

A common and keenly sought after fish in rivers and estuaries. This fish is usually taken at about 35cm and a weight of 700gm, angling with very light gear and a flexible rod, and float-fishing with baits of green weed known variously as "moss", "Cabbage" and "sea-lettuce".

The Blackfish is blue-grey in colour, with from 5 to 8 dark vertical bands over the body. This is a good table fish if properly prepared. It should be bled on capture, filleted and skinned as soon as possible. The refrigerated fillets should be deep fried in bread crumbs.

Location: Reef areas
