The Bludger is a dark fleshed (though edible) Trevally, of our more northerly reef waters. ranging southwards to the Capricorn Group of coral cays. It takes its rather colourful vernacular name from the detestation held for it by the North Queensland professional fishermen, who usually hook it when trolling for the far more valuable Mackerels, thereby wasting bait, time, and effort. However, reef-fishermen line fishing for such bottom species as Emperors. Sea Perches. Rock Cods. etc., will go out of their way to fish for Bludgers for baiting purposes: the rather soft. oily flesh make, a most attractive bait.
The species is greenish above, silvery and white below : a dark indistinct spot is located on the gill cover. The soft dorsal and anal fins are greenish. marked with black. The Bludger grows to 760 mm (30 inches) and is a very mediocre table fish.
