Blue Spotted Trevally (Caranx bucculentus)

(Click for large pic. 22Kb)

This species is one of the few heavily-spotted trevallies. It is almost invariably taken by line fishermen; like all members of its family, this deep bodied fish is a swift swimmer and a game fighter. The keel at the tail base consists of a scaly armouring and can cause painful cuts.

The Blue Spotted Trevally is pale olive green above silvery below. There is a conspicuous black spot at the base of the pectoral fin and a large dark spot on the gill cover. Adult fish have blue spots scattered over the upper half of the body. It grows to a length of 660 mm. The Trevally is quite edible, but does not enjoy the high reputation as a table fish as do some of its better-eating relatives. This may have its origin in poor icing down techniques.
