One of our smaller mackerels, found in coastal and estuarine waters along the entire Queensland coast line, this fish is often confused with younger specimens of Narrow barred mackerel (Spanish mackerel), but they are readily separable on two features: fin size and the colour pattern. The soft dorsal and anal fins are much larger in this fish than in the Spanish mackerel; further more, the vertical bars or bands on the side are very much broader and fewer in number.
This fish is generally caught by trolling or spinning with small lures or pilchards or cut baits. This fish affords good sport and is of good edible quality. However, beware larger specimens could contain ciguatera (a fish toxin) see section on Spanish Mackerel.
Season: June to October but can be taken all year. Location: one to three kilometres off shore in vicinity of reefs
