This is one of the largest of our Trevallies, growing to a length of 1.3 m and a weight of 36 kg; it is a hard-fighting fish, though not as good sport, weight-for-weight, as the Turrum, a species with which the Great Trevally is often confused. The two are readily distinguished by the count of the soft dorsal fin, which has from 19 to 21 rays in the Great Trevally, while the Turrum has from 29 to 31 rays.
It is captured by line-fishing in coastal and offshore waters. Young fish are gregarious, moving in large shoals across the shallow sandy bays. The young are bright golden, the body crossed with four or five broad dark vertical bars; the adults are dark-blue-green to gold above, shading to yellow-green and silvery below. There is a round black spot on the gill-cover.
