Hardy Head (Pranesus ogilbyi Whitley )

(Click for large pic. 50Kb)

Large shoals of this little fish occur in bays, estuaries, and inshore coastal waters where it is preyed upon by such fishes as Tailor. Bream. Flathead. Tunas. Amberjacks; in fact, all the larger predators. It is probably one of the best of our multipurpose baits; it is used successfully for Pike (Yellow tail) as a flicked bait: for Bream and Flathead, and even in the surf for Tailor; and is very effective on such reef species as Snapper. Emperors, Sweetlips and Rock cods.

Large quantities of Hardyheads can be captured in the vicinity of jetties and piers by using a jig bought from tackle shops. The little 15 m (50 foot) bait net can be hauled to good effect on this species: it is advantageous to throw handfuls of wet sand into the water to keep the shoal interested while the net is being walked around them.
Cast nets can be used successfully to catch this species as well. This fish grows to a length of about 170 mm (6.7 inches), but is more usually seen at 90 100 mm (3.5 4 inches). It is pale greenish above and white below, with a pronounced silvery horizontal band along the sides.
