Hussar (Lutjanus amabilis De Vis)

(Click for large pic. xxKb)

The Hussar is a beautiful little Sea perch found commonly on the coastal reefs of South Queensland to about the vicinity of Rockhampton; it is not generally seen in more northerly waters.

True to type examples are taken as far south as Cape Moreton (S. Q1d.). This fish is bright pink in colour with a brilliant yellow band running horizontally from the gill cover to the tail. Above this, a series of rather pale yellow bands run upwards and backwards. The caudal fin is pink, edged with yellow.

This species grows to about 450 mm (18 inches); it is often regarded as a nuisance because it takes and mutilates bottom baits intended for larger fish.
