The Spotted Javelin-fish is more commonly encountered in northern waters. It is an excellent table-fish growing to a length of 600 mm (24 inches), and is generally taken by hand-lining with fish baits towards the mouths of mangrove creeks and off rocky foreshores. It feeds dominantly on such small fish as Mullet, Gar-fishes, Pilchards and Hardyheads, as well as molluscs and crustaceans, and is a powerful and determined fighter when hooked. Large examples are sometimes mistaken for outsized Bream. This species is readily distinguishable from the related Small-spotted Javelin-fish,
