This close relative of our Snapper is readily distinguished in being a much deeper bodied fish, whose general shape confers the name Frying pan Snapper on it in southern waters.
The dorsal spines are appreciably, prolonged, another feature of identification. It is a beautiful fish similar in coloration to its larger relative, being deep rosy pink above and shading to silvery below. Each row of scales appears as a broken pinkish line. There are four or more dusky bands on the bed) which become less distinct in larger specimens.
It is taken on reefs along the entire Queensland coastline, and grows to at least 500 mm (20 inches); however. specimens larger than 380 mm (15 inches) in length are rare.
