Local Common Names: Painted Sweetlip, Blackall or Slatey bream

(Click for large pic. 54Kb)

In adult fish the body is uniformly drab-grey to bronze, paler below, the body and tail profusely speckled with small olive green spots. It is known to reach 5.5 Kg. Blackall are taken by rock and reef fishermen, using baits of prawn or cut fish. A hard fighter when hooked, it is not esteemed as a food fish. Its comparatively poor edible qualities place it in the general category that fishermen term "Mother-in-Law Fish".
Season: all year but best February to May
