A large, swift swimming fish reaching a length of 1.5 m (5 feet), the Oxeye Herring is fairly common in estuarine waters of the entire Queensland coastline. It affords splendid sport on light tackle. Catches at sizes exceeding 1.2 m (4 feet) are not common.
It is bright silvery in colour, with the back olive greenish The last ray of the dorsal fin is produced to form a long. trailing filament. Juveniles are often found in land locked freshwater coastal lagoons which have become temporarily shut off from the sea.
The species is not highly, regarded as a food fish because of the abundance of fine bones running through the flesh. Some anglers prefer to overcome this problem by marinating fillets overnight in vinegar, followed by the use of a pressure cooker: even then, however, the fish remains quite flavourless.
