The Papuan Trevally is typically found in North Queensland coastal waters, extending through the Torres Strait region into New Guinea. Occasional samples are taken as far south as the Noosa estuary (S. Qld). Young fish enter bays and harbours, the adults moving out into more open waters.
This is a heavily built species growing to 840 mm (33 inches); it is predominantly a dull yellowish fish. bronze tinged above and greenish below. Both dorsal fins are blackish, the other fins yellow. Young fish may show a series of dark cross bands on the body. The eye of this species is substantially covered by a pair of gelatinous eyelids. the rearmost one being especially wide.
The distribution of young fish (to about 1.4 kg, or 3 lb. in weight) appears to extend at least as far south as the Noosa River (S. Qld.), where occasional specimens are taken on trolled plugs and lures
. Fish up to about 3.6 kg (8 lb.) weight are excellent eating.
