Sand Bass (Psammoperca waigiensis Cuvier )
Local Common Names: Glass eyed perch, Jewel-eye, Reef Barramundi

(Click for large pic. 18Kb)

The Sand Bass grows only to about 380 mm (15 inches) in length and is often confused with juvenile Barramundi or Giant Perch. Lates calcarifer (Bloch), a species to which it is closely allied; however, it is readily distinguished from the latter in that it is a dull brownish fish rather than greenish grey, and in having granular teeth on the tongue.

This fish inhabits reefs and rocky, foreshores of the Central and North Queensland coast: the dull brownish body may have a series of horizontal dark streaks running along the sides. The fins are brown, except the pectorals and the ventrals, which are yellow.

The Sand Bass is quite good eating, but lacks the popular appeal of its larger relative. the Barramundi or Giant Perch. Its alternative names of "Jewel Eye" and "Glass eyed Perch” refer to the fact that the eyes of night caught fish glow vividly, as do those of the Barramundi itself.
