The Sand Flathead is not a large species; it rarely exceeds 450 mm (18 inches) in length. but what it lacks in size it makes up in edible qualities. It is generally found on open ocean beaches of our entire coastline. but will enter the more saline estuaries. It bites readily on baits of yabbies and peeled prawns, and on small cut baits flicked over the bottom; in fact. it will rise to an artificial plug or lure. This species is a sandy brown above. profusely speckled with cream~ wlite spots that combine to give an effect of light and dark blotching. The Sand Flathead is readily recognised by the form of the “flag” set in its caudal fin (see photograph), this is pure white, and has three or four oblique dark brown bands on the upper half and two very conspicuous broad black white edged bars on the lower part. All fins are lightly banded with pale brown.
