This species is uniformly olive-yellow above. The Common Shovel nosed Ray is distributed through tropical Queensland coastal waters into Western Australia and the Northern Territory; it is found abundantly near sandy cays of the Great Barrier Reef where it grows to a length of 2.4 m (8 feet).
These harmless Shovelnoses enter the shallows on a rising tide to feed on molluscs and bask motionless in the warm water, resting on the bottom; at such times they can be captured by, stalking them from behind and grasping the tail.
