Silver Jewfish (Nibea soldado Lacepede)
Local Common Names: Banana Jew, Grassy Jew

(Click for large pic. 23Kb)

A small Jewfish of Northern coastal waters and estuaries, reaching about 760mm (30 inches) in length, the Silver Jewfish extends commonly into the Gulf of Carpentaria where it ascends rivers above the limits of brackish water.

It is generally greenish above and silvery below; the dorsal fins are dusky, the ventrals white, and other fins yellow. It is distinguished from the Spotted Jewfish in that there are no dark blotches on the back or the fins.

The Silver Jewfish is important to both the angling and net catches of our northern waters. While it is generally accepted as a good table-fish, popular opinion holds the other members of the Jewfish group to be superior to it.
