The Southern Herring (Harengula abbreviata) is a blue green fish with silvery sides bearing three indistinct gold bands or streaks. Dense black shoals of them appear off the southern coastline in midwinter. It is in demand as a popular bait fish, and is one of the many such incorrectly termed “Pilchards” or “Pilchers”. This species attains 200mm (8 inches).
