The Teraglin is a reef dwelling fish of more southerly Queensland waters. extending northwards about as far as Wolf Rock at Double Island Point (South Queensland). It seldom ventures close inshore. and is generally seen only, by amateur anglers with the equipment and perseverance necessary to fish the offshore reefs at night.
Teraglin appear to congregate in the vicinity of discrete reefs of their choice to the virtual exclusion of other similar reefs close by. Lines baited with squid heads or cut baits are lowered to the bottom, and then hauled in 6 9 m (20 to 30 feet); these fish appear to favour off bottom feeding at and after dusk.
Teraglin are commonly captured at a weight of 11 kg (25 lb.). and are known to reach 19.5 kg (43 lb.). They are bluish above silvery on the sides, and white below. The cheeks are golden; the inside of the mouth and the inside of the gill cover are bright yellow. The pectoral fins are grey with a black spot at the base,
One identificatory feature of this fish is that the caudal fin is curved inwards, Teraglin often have an unpleasantly strong and peculiar taint on capture, strongly, reminiscent of an ammoniacal smell. This vanishes on cooking. The flesh is generally regarded as superior to that of the Mulloway or Jewfish.
