The Triple tail is a large scaled fish with a deep and well compressed body; It is known locally as the Jumping Cod because of its remarkable leaping ability. Although known to reach a weight of 14 kg (30 lb.), few Queensland Triple tails are seen at a size greater than 4 kg (9 lb.). Its coloration reflects its normal habitat of muddy mangrove lined coastal creeks and streams: it is generally a uniform dark brown, shading through to blackish grey, darkest on the head and nape. Triple tails taken from rocky regions are often mottled with dark grey and dusky black. The sides and belly usually have a creamy yellow tinge. The pectoral fins are dull yellow: the caudal carries a broad and conspicuous yellow margin. Northern anglers fishing with live bait for Barramundi and Salmon sometimes encounter this fish, which is considered excellent eating; in fact, some prefer it to Barramundi.
