Turrum (Carangoides emburyi Whitley)

(Click for large pic. 21Kb)

The Turrum is a sough after game fish growing to 41.4 kg(91 lb.) in weight. well known to sportsmen for its fighting ability. Large fish are usually taken by trolling from a moving launch, using spoons or drones, or baits of Garfish or cut fillets. It usually strikes without any preliminary warning, and puts up a very determined fight for freedom.

Sometimes anglers fishing the bottom with hand lines hook a Turrum; it is commonplace for half an hour to elapse before a 1 3 kg (50 lb.) example can be brought to gaff, even on very heavy hand gear. The young fish inhabit the shallow inshore waters. This fish is opalescent blue above and silvery below; a few yellow spots are scattered over the upper part of the body. There are indications of six darker vertical bars across the back. There is a small black blotch on the gill cover, and at the base of the pectoral fin. A broken line of dark marks lies against the base of the anal fin.

Smaller examples (up to about 7 kg, or 15 lb. in weight) are of excellent edible quality, but very large ones tend to become somewhat coarse, dry, and flavourless.
